NO END IN SIGHT: "On March 19, 2003,
forces from the United States and a handful of allied nations invaded
Iraq to remove Saddam Hussein from power. American military leaders
expected the conflict to last no more than a few months, and President
George W. Bush declared that major military operations were over less
than two months later. However, Iraq soon became a dangerous quagmire
for American forces, and near the end of 2006, Secretary of Defense
Donald Rumsfeld, one of the key architects of America's strategy in
Iraq, resigned from office due to public outcry and Bush declared he
was "rethinking" his plan of attack in Iraq as the nation sank into
civil war, with U.S. troops the frequent targets of attacks on both
sides. How and why did America's leaders decide to invade Iraq? How did
they formulate a strategy that went so far wrong? And can anything be
done to salvage the situation? Filmmaker Charles Ferguson, a former
advisor with the Brookings Institution, examines these questions in No
End In Sight, a documentary on the War in Iraq which includes
interviews with a number of figures involved in the conflict's
decision-making process, some speaking on camera about the war for the
first time." (Mark Deming, All Movie Guide) Visit the official website for more information at www.noendinsightmovie.com/
GOYA'S GHOSTS: "From two-time Academy
Award® winning director Milos Forman and three-time Academy Award®
winning producer Saul Zaentz, GOYA'S GHOSTS is a sweeping historical
epic, told through the eyes of celebrated Spanish painter Francisco
Goya (STELLAN SKARSGARD). Set against the backdrop of political turmoil
at the end of the Spanish Inquisition and start of the invasion of
Spain by Napoleon's army, the film captures the essence and beauty of
Goya's work which is best known for both the colorful depictions of the
royal court and its people, and his grim depictions of the brutality of
war and life in 18th century Spain. JAVIER BARDEM is Brother Lorenzo,
an enigmatic, cunning member of the Inquisition's inner circle who
becomes infatuated with Goya's teenage muse, Ines (NATALIE PORTMAN),
when she is falsely accused of heresy and sent to prison." (taken from

During this season's Urban Nights
event on September 14th, the City of Dayton is doing something
different - in an effort to get Dayton's college students more familiar
with things to do and places to go in Downtown Dayton,
they are bringing in first-year students from University of Dayton,
Wright State University, Central State University, Sinclair Community
College and Wilberforce University to have some fun during one of the
best nights to be downtown.
Students will get free transportation from and back to their respective
schools, thanks to RTA and the schools themselves. There will be a
reception at the Old Courthouse
where students will receive info packets that will help them to see the
many things to do in see in Dayton. Also, there will be a raffle, and
winners will be announced when the students return from their city
adventure back to Courthouse Plaza to see the headline band Blind Spot before returning back to campus.
The Sideshow is an annual event in cooperation with The Circus
Creative Collective. Last year’s event connected many genres of art,
from music and food to installation and performance art. It was a
spectacular night showcasing many diverse artists both new and
established. This year’s event is sure to be even more incredible!
The Dayton Circus was inspired by the energy and character of the
first Sideshow. The undertakings of this underground art show were able
to show an intense desire for connection, diversity and alternative
stimuli within our city. A year later, The Circus is helping to provide
a nourishing environment that will encourage community interaction,
artistic collaboration, and the empowerment of the individual. It is
The Circus’ goal to provide opportunities to create, perform, and share
freely in the experience of living. The Sideshow is a celebration of
these endeavors.
This is a community event put together by participating artists as
well as the public. In effort to connect with an already varied art
scene, The Sideshow will start in conjunction with Urban Nights and
continue the following night with new performances and more to
celebrate.
If you have a chance, you GOTTA check this out. It will definitely prove to you that the scene in Dayton, Ohio is alive and well!

I think it’s time to end this crap about Dayton being so unsafe. The suburbs are just as dangerous and the Dayton area isn’t unique to the rest of the country so it’s time to put an end to the unjust and negative press. -- Ron Gable (Jazz Advocate)
With Shannon being pregnant and due this month (baby girl coming soon), we have not been to many of the places we used to frequent, because apparently it isn't good to drink alcohol when you're pregnant. Well, last night we went by the Cannery Arts & Design Centre for the First Friday Art & Jazz open house. The place was packed despite the 90+ degree heat, and the art & jazz was top notch. While walking back home, we passed the Wine Gallery & Cafe - a nice wine bar that opened up late last year by Brian Linnean, who also runs Market Wine (at the Second Street Market). We had gotten to know Brian when he first opened, and enjoyed many o' bottle of some great wines that he offered. Well, last night we decided that we had to check it out again despite Shannon's "can't drink cuz I'm pregnant" condition. And we're very happy we did.
Upon walking in, we were happily greeted by Liza (who also waited on us) and given a seat under the much-needed air conditioner vent (did I mention 90+ degrees and Shannon is pregnant?) Brian came right over and immediately made us feel at home, and let us know that he was happy to see us again. I enjoyed a glass of red (lemonade for Shannon) while we looked over their brand new dinner menu. Last time we had been there, the menu was pretty pared down and offered little more than appetizers. But this new menu was quite extensive and had many good looking items. And the wine list had grown a bit as well. We started with a nice cheese & cracker plate and went on to order - an entree salad for Shannon, and Crab Cake dinner for me. Everything was delicious, and we later learned that the chef had come there from Flemings! Needless to say, we were happily surprised at how far our new neighborhood wine bar had come. The service was good, and not in a scripted chain-restaurant formula way, but in a way that really made us feel like we were at a friend's house. For my second glass of wine, Brian brought over a Shiraz that he recommended, and it was spectacular. So much so that we ended up buying two bottles to take home. (btw - this is the only place we know of that will allow you to order a bottle of wine at the table and take home whatever you don't finish)
If you have never been to the Wine Gallery & Cafe and you are looking for a truly local experience, I recommend you give it a try. And if you had been there when they first opened and were going through the learning curve, be sure to go back - you won't be disappointed.
