Creative Region Initiative Officially Kicks Off

Idea Last night the Creative Region Initiative was officially kicked off as the organizers of the project and the 32 chosen catalysts met one another at the Westcott House in Springfield.  There was quite an energy in the room - we have some great people in the group and it is possibly the most diverse group of people I've ever been involved with in my life.  There is also the sense that this ambitious and unique effort is very different from any other community-based project ever executed in the past.  I believe there is a ton of potential to do some projects that have a huge impact on our community and will hopefully inspire even more spin-off projects in the future and beyond.

Ohio - Land of Exurbs

Xurbs How many of you consider yourselves as living in the "exurbs"?  Though I've always had an idea of what an exurb is exactly (towns that have been built within the last ten years and are further away from the city center than the more established suburbs), this article offers a more precise definition:

    * 20% or more of workers commuting to jobs in an urbanized area
    * low housing density
    * relatively high population growth

It also looks like the exurbs of Dayton are not growing as much as those of Columbus, which is surprising when you consider the growth in Warren County.

Greater Ohio

Ohio has the third largest absolute number of people living in exurbs of any state in the nation, according to a recent Brookings Institution study, Finding Exurbia: America’s Fast-Growing Communities at the Metropolitan Fringe.  Only Texas and California have more people living in exurbs. (Read the Executive Summary and link to the complete study.)

Unlike many other states with growing exurbs, however, Ohio is barely growing in population as a whole. It’s also surprising to find Ohio ranked so high given that it is only the seventh largest state in total population.
