Second Annual Luminara Lighting

Please join the residents of Historic Oregon as we host our Second Annual Lighting of Luminaras on Saturday evening, December 22 at 6:00pm - midnight.  The candles signify the lighting of the path for Mary and Joseph to Bethlehem for the birth of Jesus for some...it signifies comradery and friendship to some...and can have many meanings to others.  We will be lighting some nearly 1,000 candles this year along our neighborhood streets, primarily at the major intersections and in our community park, Newcom-Founders Park at the corners of Green / Brown / Hess Streets.  The weather is expect to cooperate...somewhat!

So, plan to check out Oregon's candles and drive or walk the streets of Dayton's oldest residential neighborhood...then stop in at one of Oregon's fine/casual dining restaurants for a warm meal...or at a pub for a snack and holiday drink.

Merry Christmas, Mike Martin

City gives Dayton Canoe Club building key status

As we had posted a while back, the Dayton Canoe Club has been around for almost a century and had been trying to gain historic status - well finally they got their wish!  Now we just need to get more people aware of this Dayton institution...  (read about some of the cool things happening on the river here - all right here in Dayton!)

Link: City gives Dayton Canoe Club building key status.

DAYTON — The two-story building seems to emerge naturally from the banks of the Great Miami River.

The Dayton Canoe Club building, part of the city's riverscape for nearly 100 years, gained protective status as a local landmark from the Dayton City Commission on Wednesday.

"I can see the Canoe Club from my house. It's a wonderful thing for my Riverdale neighborhood," Clyde Collins said.

Oregon "Arts" District

Details are still sketchy, but DMM has learned that there are plans in the works to transform 5th Street in the OD into a true Arts District.  We will be talking to those who are behind this venture very soon and will hopefully be able to fill you all in on the details.  You heard it here first...

South Park Food Drive Underway

Historic South Park is holding its first annual food drive for the Gospel Mission.

Ken and Sue Clarkston, are a local pastor and his wife, who are reverred members of the South Park Family, and run the Mission. As a way of saying thank you for all of the hardwork that they do through out the year in our neighborhood, their neighbors in South Park are holding a food drive to benefit the Mission food pantry. Donations will be taken from now until December 21 at the South Park Tavern, on Wayne Ave. Our goal is raise at least 500 lbs of food to help the people who are served by the Mission to get through the winter season. As of this posting, 195 lbs. in food donations have been collected.

Please help Ken and Sue give some needy families a decent meal, and give generously.

Thanks
